

On Campus
Student concern about climate change and sustainability has propelled these issues onto the campus agenda on college campuses around the country. Students are making their views known, they are taking action and demanding results, and they are urging their own schools to become climate leaders. Higher education, environmental, clean energy and sustainability organizations have responded to the need and led the charge. The following are some of the groups helping “making things happen” on college campuses.
Alliance to Save Energy’s Green Campus Program, ASE’s student-led initiative that works closely with administrators, faculty and staff on thirteen California campuses to educate the campus community on energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and encouraging the next generation of energy efficiency professionals.

American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), a high-visibility effort led by college Presidents to address global warming and neutralize greenhouse gas emissions. The ACUPCC provides a framework and support for America’s colleges and universities, in which Presidents signing the PCC Commitment are pledging to eliminate their campuses’ carbon emissions over time.

American College Personnel Association (ACPA), a leading group in advancing student affairs and engaging students for a lifetime of learning and discovery, headquartered in Washington, D.C. at the National Center for Higher Education. ACPA hosted the second annual Institute on Sustainability and is a member of HEASC.

Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), a membership-based association of colleges and universities working to advance sustainability in higher education in the US and Canada. It maintains an extensive resource center of sustainability initiatives and policies, discussion lists, hosts an annual conference, and publicizes professional development opportunities. AASHE also publishes an electronic bulletin board and an annual digest.

Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA), a membership organization focused on educational facilities, formed to support educational excellence with quality leadership and professional management through education, research and recognition. APPA has produced several sustainability publications and offers regular professional development courses on facility management strategies in campus sustainability.

Clean Air - Cool Planet (CA-CP), an organization dedicated to finding solutions to global warming through civic engagement, education and public policy.CA-CP’s online resource, the Campus Climate Action Toolkit (CCAT), includes the Campus Carbon Calculator used by many colleges for assessing greenhouse gas emissions and helping to create a climate action plan.

College Sustainability Report Card, an organization annually grading over 300 colleges in the U.S. and Canada on their sustainability programs and progress.The Report Card conducts annual assessments in nine policy and practice categories, thereby seeking to encourage outstanding sustainability and endowment investment programs.

Disciplinary Associations Network for Sustainability (DANS), formed after more than 20 academic disciplinary associations were convened to discuss each discipline’s potential contributions to a more sustainable future. Participating groups include national associations for psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion, biology, chemistry, engineering, anthropology, political science, math, broadcasting, architecture, women’s studies, and others.

Eco League, a consortium of five small liberal arts institutions dedicated to environmental learning and the active pursuit of environmental studies. Included are Alaska Pacific University, College of the Atlantic, Green Mountain College, Northland College and Prescott College.

Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium (HEASC), formed to advance sustainability in higher education associations and in the system of higher education itself. A producer of the Campus Sustainability Planning Network.

National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), offering relevant and timely programming, publications, and other resources specific to business officers and staff at colleges, universities, and independent schools. In 2009, the NACUBO President appointed a group to help create the strategic vision and lead member institutions towards a more sustainable future. NACUBO hosts a Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference each spring.

National Association of Educational Procurement (NAEP), facilitating the development, exchange and practice of effective and ethical procurement principles and techniques within higher education and associated communities, through continuing education, networking, public information and advocacy. NAEP maintains a sustainability microsite.

National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program (NWF), promoting climate leadership and sustainability among colleges and universities by providing resources and technical support, creating networking opportunities and organizing education events. The annual Chill Out: Campus Solutions to Global Warming is a leading competition and awards program recognizing college and university innovation to solve global warming.

Net Impact, an international non-profit organization made up of MBAs, graduate students and professionals with a mission to inspire, educate and equip individuals to use the power of business to create a more socially and environmentally sustainable world. Campus Greening projects establish environmentally sustainable projects on campus, helping universities save money, improve learning conditions and increase efficiency.

Power Shift 2009, recently convened 10,000 young leaders in Washington, DC to strengthen the movement for climate and economic solutions. Participants met with Members of Congress to ask for bold leadership on green jobs, and a clean, just energy future. Power Shift is currently the largest youth-centered conference on green jobs, environmental justice, clean energy solutions, ecological justice, and environmental equity.

Second Nature, initiates and supports high-leverage national initiatives and programs aimed at re-orienting the higher education sector toward more sustainable outcomes. It works with higher education leaders to make sustainability a strategic imperative; the non-profit identifies and creates opportunities for sustainability while building strong networks and coalitions among institutions and organizations within higher education.

Sierra Student Coalition (SSC), a broad network of high school and college-aged youth that trains and organizes youth to run effective campaigns to protect the environment and develop leaders. The SSC is the youth-led chapter of the Sierra Club, the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization. Sierra Magazine sponsors an annual “Cool Schools” competition with a list of “Ten that get it” and "Five that Fail".

Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), a community of planners who serve higher education. A co-founder of Campus Sustainability Day with Second Nature (October 21, 2009) the Society became more deeply involved in campus sustainability in order to pursue two of the society's core values, integrated planning in support of excellence in the academic enterprise and innovative, collaborative, and multidisciplinary approaches to planning issues.

University Leaders for a Sustainable Future, (ULSF), the Secretariat for signatories of the Talloires Declaration (1990), which has been signed by over 400 college and university presidents and chancellors worldwide. ULSF supports sustainability as a critical focus of teaching, research, operations and outreach in higher education through publications, research, and assessment.
